Important Dates Coming Up

The Southwest Austin elementary school boundary proposal will be presented to the Austin ISD Board of Trustees during their work session on Monday, February 8. The approximate time for the boundary presentation, according to the Board’s posted agenda, is 6:40 p.m. The Board does not vote during work sessions; the vote will occur at the Board’s regular meeting on February 22. While the February 8 meeting is open to the public, no public comment will be taken. The meeting will be broadcast live on cable channel 22 (Time Warner Cable).

Yesterday, Austin ISD announced that the Board of Trustees will hold a special public forum on the boundaries on Thursday, February 11. The 90-minute public comment section is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. The process to sign up to speak is the same as that used for regular Board meetings. You must sign up to speak ahead of time, either between 7:45 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. in the Superintendent’s Office or from 4:45 p.m. until the meeting begins in the Board Auditorium. Comments are limited to two minutes per speaker and speaking slots are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Both of these meetings will be held in the Board Auditorium (Building B) located in the Austin ISD headquarters complex at 1111 West 6th Street.

Task Force's "Grandfathering" Recommendation

In addition to adopting the Plan 3 boundary map proposal on January 21, the Boundary Task Force also crafted several recommendations to send to the AISD Board of Trustees. Included in these recommendations is a “grandfathering” policy for current 4th graders (who will be 5th graders in the 2010-11 school year). Under this policy, these students and their siblings could remain at their current school even though the boundary map has been changed.

As more information becomes available about this policy and how it will be implemented, we will post it here on the blog.

Again, at this time, the grandfathering policy is only a recommendation by the Task Force. It will need to be approved by the school board to take effect.

Plan 3 Map Now Online

The final Plan 3 map is now posted on the Austin ISD web site here.

You can see street-level detail if you zoom in.

Plan 3 Map Finalized

The map described in the January 13 posting below was approved as the final proposal (Plan 3) by the Boundary Task Force last night. You can view the working draft version at http://www.austinisd.org/inside/2004bond/boundaries/docs/bond_SWES_Plan3.pdf

When AISD posts all of the information from the January 21 Task Force meeting, the link will be provided here.

So, what happens next?

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees will discuss the boundary map proposal at their February 8 work session. Then, they will vote on the proposal at their February 22 meeting. Board meetings are open to the public and they also are broadcast live on cable channel 22.

This blog will be updated with the latest boundary news and information as we continue through this process.

Boundary Map In Flux

The school boundary map is in transition yet again. At last night’s Boundary Task Force meeting, the following revisions were made to the map:

--Areas 149I, 149J, 149M, 149O, 149N1, and 149N2 are re-zoned to the new southwest elementary school

--Areas 249A, 249C, 249D, and 249E are re-zoned to Patton Elementary

--All Areas of 349 remain at Oak Hill Elementary

Please note that these revisions do not represent a new draft map. The boundary map is a work in progress at this point. The Boundary Task Force will meet again on January 21 to continue adjusting the map.

Because of Oak Hill’s large geographic boundary and high projected growth rate, all areas of the Oak Hill Elementary boundary could potentially be in play until the plan is finalized.

Community Meeting Draws Crowd

The January 5th Austin ISD Community Meeting on southwest elementary boundaries drew a large crowd, with approximately 300 people in attendance. Many, many Oak Hill Elementary parents were at the meeting, since our school will be so greatly impacted by the Task Force’s recommendations.

Over 80 people signed up to speak and share their views with the Boundary Task Force. Everyone who came was given a comment card to provide written feedback as well. All of the public input will be compiled for the Boundary Task Force’s review before their January 12 meeting. At this meeting, it is expected that the Task Force will make final revisions to the boundary map. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at AISD Headquarters (1111 W. 6th Street), Building B. While the meeting is open to the public, there will not be a public comment period.
